Ceramic Workshops

The Clay Retreat at Casa Paço D’ilhas

For those who want to be completely immersed in the world of ceramics, there is the 6-day pottery retreat. It happens twice a year in spring and autumn. Keep an eye out on the dates.

The ceramic retreat is an immersion of food and clay at the most beautiful place of Ericeira, Casa Paço D’ilhas. The casa is a little gem located just outside of Ericeira, near the world renown surf spot Ribeira D’ilhas.  You will be pampered with the best food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as guided by the best ceramicists in the field.

Besides the delicious food and challenging pottery workshops there are plenty of other things to do such as: beautiful nature walks, mountain bike trails, surf lessons, yoga classes, massages, soaking in the sun at the beach, etc.

Collections

Inspired by the wild natural landscapes of Ericeira, Portugal, with its changing colors, Gaëlle ceramica designs tableware and interior decor that is practical but also breathes simplicity and tranquility. Durability, earthy tones and quiet colors are the starting point in developing the collections.

All tableware and decorations are handmade in Portugal, most were thrown on the potter’s wheel. Gaëlle, the driving force behind gaelle ceramica, works with stoneware clay. The tableware is fired at 1250° making the ceramics very strong and durable.

If you want your personalised set of ceramic tableware, we can sit together and customize your order.

The natural collection represents the use of pure clay types, the Earth collection represents the warm tones of the earthy colours of Ericeira, and the Wabi sabi collection represents simplicity, freshness, or quietness.

ABOUT ME

Hi! My name is Gaëlle Van Branteghem and founder of Gaelle Ceramica. I moved to Ericeira in 2017 and was ‘forced’ to rediscover myself and what I want to do in life besides being a devoted mom. I subscribed for a ceramics workshop and knew immediately that I wanted to discover more within the world of ceramics.

By coincidence I started talking to a local ceramist in Mafra, Mister Paulo, and asked him straight to the point if he wanted to teach me the technique of wheel-thrown pottery and so I started throwing two times a week. I fell in love with the wheel the moment I started. The mesmirizing proces of making a piece of ceramic out of a ball of clay is so fulfilling.

I straight away knew I wanted to continue with this craftsmanship and make it my business… I continued my learning process with Paulo and invested in my own wheel. Little by little I improved and my small business concept, Gaelle Ceramica, was born.

No sooner said than done, I went on a studio hunt… I got the opportunity to continue my passion in the beautiful co-working space @saltstudio. It was the perfect start to a more professional approach to ceramics.

In November 2020 I moved to a little studio in the center of Ericeira and since June 2023 I’ve moved to a bigger and more equiped studio in the centre of the little beachtown Ribamar (5’ from Ericeira). The studio is warmly decorated in the colors for wich I stand- natural and earth tones.
